- FileZilla Installation for Windows
These instructions constitute the recommended procedure for installing and configuring the FileZilla FTP client. Start by downloading the latest version of the FileZilla FTP client from FileZilla-Project.org. Remember the location to which you download the file. From time to time this link might change and be broken if you try to access it. If you encounter either a broken or wrong link, please notify us so we can adjust these instructions accordingly.
Once the executable file is downloaded, run it to commence the installation routine. During the installation process, select the default (Standard) install and retain all other default settings as you continue installation. Once FileZilla is installed, proceed to the configuration instructions below.

- FileZilla Configuration for Windows
When the FileZilla client is first started, it should look something like the image immediately below.
Image 1
Although somewhat fuzzy in the image above, note the horizontal Menu bar (File, Edit, Transfer, View, Queue, Server, Help) near the very top of the client. From the Edit menu, select Settings... to open the FileZilla Options window as depicted below.
Image 2
Notice that the window opens to Connection information. Alter Timeout Detection to "If zero bytes are transferred within 120 seconds, assume that the connection timed out and disconnect." Then, set Retry Settings to "When disconnected from server during transfer, wait 0 seconds between login attempts and try again up to 0 times."
Next, select File transfer settings in the left window pane (several items below Connection). Once there, you will note that one default setting has a check in the box labeled "Use multiple connections to transfer files." Be certain to uncheck that box as shown in the image below.
Image 3
You can leave all other settings at their default values and press the OK button to close the FileZilla Options window and return to the main client window. The next step involves configuring a connection profile (site in FileZilla parlance). From the File menu, select Site Manager... to open the Site Manager dialog box as depicted below.

Press the New Site button; give the site a meaningful name such as MGT Server; and configure the "Site details" per the information shown in one of the four, immediately following images. If entering site details for regular FTP access to our primary Web server (128.205.202.170 / also known as mgt.buffalo.edu), see image immediately below. Fill in values as shown except for User, Account, and Password values for which you would enter your own. The User and Account values are the same. The User, Account, and Password information consists of the FTP user account information provided you by the IT department at the time your FTP access was first provided. If you do not recall this information, please contact the IT department.

Fill in values as shown except for User, Account, and Password values for which you would enter your own. The User and Account values are the same. The User, Account, and Password information consists of your UBIT credentials; these are the same credentials for accessing E–mail at UB.

Once you enter information for one site, you can create additional sites in a similar fashion or press Save and Exit. Let's assume you Exit FileZilla at this point but subsequently get the urge to connect to a FTP server. How do you do that? (Exit the FileZilla FTP client as you would any other application. That is: From the File menu select Exit.)
- Start FileZilla
- Go to the File menu
- Select Site Manager...
- Select (highlight) the site to which you wish to connect
- Press the Connect button
If this is your first time connecting to one of our secure FTP sites, you should see the certificate prompt below, which identifies the FTP server to which you are attempting to connect. Check the box labeled "Always trust this certificate" as shown in the image below and press the Accept button. If connecting to 128.205.202.198, the Common Name, Valid information, and Fingerprint will differ, but all other FTP server identifying information should be the same.
Image 9
That's it; you're connected. Disconnect by pressing the Disconnect button from the Button/Tool bar immediately below the Menu bar. How do you know which button that is? If you press and hold any of the active Tool bar buttons while looking down at the Status line (the horizontal bar at the very bottom of the FileZilla client window), you will see various button–appropriate tips describing each button's function. For example if you have the FileZilla Client open and look down at the Status line, you should see the word "Ready" in the left corner as depicted in the image immediately below.
Image 10
However, if you press and hold the button with a red X in the middle while reading the Status line, you should see the words "Disconnect from server" as shown in the image immediately below. By pressing and holding each active button successively while reading the Status line, you can learn the function of each button.
Image 11
Finally if you desire to back up your sites (connection profiles), there is a file called FileZilla.xml in the FileZilla installation–root directory. If you have site information you do not wish to lose, it is a good idea to back up this file to your personal storage site. Contact the IT staff if you don't know where to locate your personal storage site(s).

- Glub Tech Secure FTP for Macintosh
Start by downloading the latest version of the Glub Tech Secure FTP client from Glub Tech, Inc. Select the Installer option and then (on the subsequent Web page) complete the form before pressing Download Now. The default operating system listed is Windows so don't forget to select the appropriate Macintosh operating system before submitting the form. From time to time this link might change and be broken if you try to access it. If you encounter either a broken or wrong link, please notify us so we can adjust these instructions accordingly.
The installation for Glub Tech Secure FTP is fairly straight forward. Accept any defaults during installation and configure your connection. There are no accompanying images for configuring Glub Tech Secure FTP as there are for configuring FileZilla, but they really are not necessary.
When you first open a new FTP connection in Glub Tech, you will see an Open Connection window with two tabs: Connection & Options with the Connection tab selected by default. The Connection window possesses several fields for you to complete or alter. You might not be permitted to enter anything into the Profile field at this point so just ignore that field for now if you cannot enter anything into it; if you can alter the Profile field, enter something meaningful to you such as MGT Server. The value in the Profile field will become the bookmark name. For Host Name enter either the 128.205.202.170 or 128.205.202.198 IP address depending on the FTP server to which you wish to connect (see above FileZilla–connection descriptions for more detail). For User Name and Password enter either the FTP–specific account information provided you by the IT staff if connecting to our unsecure FTP server or your UBIT credentials (this is the same information you use to access E–mail at UB) if connecting to our secure FTP server. Check the box labeled "Save to Bookmarks." Once you create and save a new connection profile—stored in Glub Tech Secure FTP as a bookmark, you will be able to access the connection profile in the future via the Bookmarks menu.
Now, select the Options tab to enter the correct information there. For Security Mode and Port, enter None and 21, respectively if connecting to one of our unsecure FTP servers and enter Implicit SSL and 996, respectively if connecting to one of our secure FTP servers. Note that if you enter/select None for Security Mode, the Data Encryption checkbox is gray; that is what is supposed to occur. When you enter/select Implicit SSL for Security Mode, the Data Encryption box should be checked; if it is not checked automatically (Enabled), please check it manually. Finally, there is another box labeled Connection Type: Passive; please insure that box is checked.
Your connection profile is complete, and you can press Connect. If this is your first time connecting to one of our secure FTP servers using Glub Tech FTP Secure, then you should be informed that you are encountering a new certificate. You should see a gray box (similar—but not identical—to the one above viewed in FileZilla) containing information on the certificate that identifies the secure FTP server as a SUNY at Buffalo Management server. If so, please press Grant Always to proceed; if not, please notify us. To Disconnect from the FTP server to which you are connected, just press Disconnect, which is a button with a large red circle in the upper–left corner of the Glub Tech Secure FTP application. To exit Glub Tech Secure FTP, do so as you would from any other application; for example, from the Application (Secure FTP 2.5) menu select Quit Secure FTP 2.5 or just press Command–Q on your keyboard.
Once you create a bookmark, you can return to it and rename the Profile field if Glub Tech Secure FTP did not permit you to do so earlier. In order to do that, select the Bookmarks menu and then select Manage Bookmarks.... Select the bookmark from the left window pane whose Profile name you wish to adjust and press Edit. By default Glub Tech Secure FTP enters the Host Name into the Profile field so it might be helpful to you to rename the Profile to something meaningful like MGT Server. Press Save when finished. If you have no other bookmarks to edit, press Close to terminate the Manage Bookmarks window.
There a couple more factors of which you should be aware. If you select the Application (Secure FTP 2.5) menu and then select Preferences..., the subsequent Preferences window contains a box labeled "Use Mode Z compression." You can check this box since our FTP server supports this transmission mode. Also, the current version of Glub Tech Secure FTP permits only a single connection to any FTP server. If that changes in future versions, you will need to disable multiple, simultaneous connections. If you encounter an issue not accounted for in these instructions, please contact our staff for support.
